Motorists saw multiple ambulance, fire and police vehicles at the scene, while there were reports of an air ambulance flying overhead.

A police spokesman confirmed officers were called shortly after 4.30pm to concerns for the welfare of a person near the A21 in Sevenoaks.

“A woman was taken to hospital for medical attention and was passed into the care of health professionals.

“The A21 was reopened at about 8.15pm.”

National Highways posted a message on X, formerly Twitter, shortly after 5pm telling motorists the route would likely be shut for the evening.

A spokesperson said: “The A21 in Kent is closed in both directions between the A25 (Sevenoaks) and the A225 (Morleys Roundabout) due to a serious police-led incident.

“All emergency services are in attendance. National Highways traffic officers will also be assisting with traffic management at the scene.

“Due to the nature of this incident, the road is expected to be closed into the evening. If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.

“Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”

Motorists were advised to stick to the diversion routes in place.

Northbound traffic was told to follow the square symbol signs by exiting the A21 at Morleys Roundabout and join the A225 northbound to continue towards Sevenoaks.

Then go via the A224 and continue towards the A25 junction.

Join the A25 and head westbound, to then re-join the A21 near Chipstead.

Traffic heading southbound had to follow the hollow circle signs and were being diverted via the A25 Riverhead junction.

They should then enter the A25 eastbound lane and travel towards the A224 in Riverhead.

At this junction, it will then turn south onto the A224, which merges with and becomes the A225 in Sevenoaks.

Diverted traffic should remain on the A225 until the junction with the A21 at Morleys Farm roundabout.
