Steve Valentine, from Tonbridge, sailed through navy 10 week intensive training course

A man from Kent has completed his transformation from a civilian into a Royal Navy sailor during a 10 week intensive training course.

Steve Valentine, from Tonbridge, was put through his paces from day one of the course, undertaking a series of physical and mental challenges.

The trainee Warfare Specialist (Submarines) had to meet essential standards required by every member of the Naval Service to complete his training at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall.

The former Hugh Christie School pupil previously worked as a restaurant supervisor.

He said: “I joined the Royal Navy to see the world and for the endless opportunities and the pride of knowing you are doing something that matters.

"The training was very intense but passing the course to become part of the Royal Navy has made it all worthwhile.”

Steve, 31, will remain at his base to complete his specialist training at the Royal Navy Submarine School where he will learn how to use a range of advanced systems, including radar and electronic listening equipment to identify and track potential threats and targets.

As the course progresses the recruits take part in three extended exercises to test their skills and understanding of the principles they have been taught.

Royal Navy personnel play a vital role in Afghanistan and other land-based operations and recruits undergo training in basic combat skills which includes survival in the field.
