Tonbridge Angels manager Steve McKimm not panicking despite four straight defeats ahead of match against Chelmsford City

Tonbridge boss Steve McKimm isn’t hitting any panic buttons just yet.

Angels are on a four-match losing run in National League South and have not scored in any of those matches.

Three of those losses have been 1-0, including their defeat at Peter Taylor’s in-form Welling on Saturday, with the Wings indebted to keeper Jack Sims who produced a fine goalkeeping display to thwart Angels.

Tonbridge play host to another struggling side in Chelmsford this Saturday at Longmead, with the Essex club winless in seven and they are a point behind McKimm’s men in the league table.

But manager McKimm, whose team are four points ahead of basement boys Billericay, said: "We need to take points off everyone - whether they are at the top or the bottom.

"We are capable of doing that. Chelmsford will probably look at the position they’re in and think ‘we are in this position but we don’t want to be’ - like ourselves, like Braintree, like Billericay.

“But the only way you get out of it is by working hard and winning games. So it’s no different for Chelmsford as it is for us.

“We are 12 games in. There’s still another 28 games to go for us. Loads of points to play for.

“That’s why I’m not pushing any buttons at the moment.”

McKimm, who was due to speak to the board at training on Tuesday, is looking at bolstering his squad if the right player becomes available.

When asked if he should be getting more out of his current crop, he replied: “No, I’m getting everything out of the squad - and more.

“We are looking to add players, as we always do. But as I said in interviews at the weekend, it’s very difficult.

“There’s a couple of players we have looked at and that we are still looking at.

“But with the predicament we are in, compared to where they are at with their team in their league, they have got no reason to come down or move clubs because they are doing very well, or the clubs are doing well - even if they are not playing regularly. They are waiting for their opportunity which is understandable.

“But we are always looking, always trying.

"We will try and get what we can when we can, which will fit our club.”

McKimm also revealed he was called by ex-England boss Taylor the day after Welling had beaten Tonbridge, with ex-Angels midfielder Bradley Stevenson scoring the only goal.

He enthused: “I can’t speak highly enough of Peter, he is unbelievable.

“He phoned me on Sunday. I only met him on Saturday but he got my number and phoned me, and we had a good chat about certain things.

“As he said, they’ve got their points over the last few games - some deserved, some not deserved. But they have had their bit of luck and rode their bit of luck.

“At the end of the day, the points are what counts. He is under no illusions at the task ahead of him.

“For someone of his magnitude, with everything he’s done in the game to take time out to phone me, it speaks volumes of the gentleman. That’s somebody I will stay in touch with.

“As he said to me, anything I need in terms of help, he will always be there. But it’s an absolute credit to himself and his club, really.

“But they’ve had their bits of luck and got their points out of it.

"That’s all we need. When that happens, we might have our little run.”

Tonbridge have been drawn away to Isthmian North leaders Canvey Island in the FA Trophy second round.
