Unexploded First World War hand grenade found near children’s play area in Tunbridge Wells

An unexploded First World War hand grenade has been found near a playground.

Contractors investigating drainage issues made the grim – and potentially lethal discovery – yesterday at around 2.15pm while working near the play area at Calverley Grounds, Tunbridge Wells.

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council (TWCB) called in the army’s bomb squad who made the weapon safe without any injury.

In a video posted online of its detonation, a blast can be seen next to the tennis courts, after which one worker can be heard saying: “Well done chaps, nice one.”

A council spokesman remarked online: “It was something different for our property and estates team to deal with on a Monday!”

They added: “Thanks to Army Ordnance for their help in sorting it out *boom* "Nice one!"

TWBC and the Ministry of Defence were approached for comment.
