Poppies rained from the sky in Headcorn this morning as villagers were treated to a flypast.

A formation of four planes dropped poppies on the crowds below and a Spitfire also made an appearance.

It came as hundreds of people flooded the village to pay their respects to the men and women who gave their lives, and those who continue to risk theirs, for the country.

Crowds surrounded the village’s war memorial on High Street for a two-minute silence at 11am and to pay tribute through prayer.

Village resident Jane Armstrong said: “It was a fantastic service and there was a huge crowd. As it rained we thought the Spitfire couldn’t fly with the other four, but then, right at the last minute it appeared.”

The poppy drop was organised by the Tiger Club based at Headcorn Aerodrome.
