Sainbury’s in Headcorn accused of ‘facilitating’ anti-social behaviour after stolen eggs and cream used in ‘daily’ attacks

A supermarket has been accused of being part of “irresponsible recklessness” after eggs and cream believed to have been stolen from one of its stores were used in a series of attacks.

Headcorn Parish Council has “implored” Sainsbury’s to “implement preventative measures” after councillors say they saw young shoplifters leaving the village branch with the items.

Eggs were smashed all over Days Green Play Park last month and is thought to have caused a child to have an allergic reaction, which required emergency medical attention.

Residents have also taken to social media to complain about eggs being thrown at their homes and cars.

And parish councillors say they have seen Sainsbury’s egg boxes discarded around the village.

A letter from the parish council to Sainsbury’s CEO Simon Roberts, seen by KentOnline, called on him to take action.

It said: “We have seen eggs stolen by girls of around eight to 10 years old so that they might be used as missiles and the egg boxes are left lying around as proof of where the eggs originated.

“There is serious talk of boycotting the shop due to the high prices in store that are at least in part needed to offset the level of crime that occurs in the shop in terms of shoplifting.

“We hope that you can see how bad it is for the village, your customers, and the parish council not to mention how bad it would be for Sainsbury’s as a brand to be seen to be facilitating this level of anti-social and criminal behaviour.

“The eggs and cream could easily be put out the back or removed from the shop floor so that only adults could access them through the medium of your staff, or to put them by the tills when staff are able to keep watch over them.

“Before it seems that we are overreacting to one incident, the egging of houses, cars and people is a daily occurrence in the village.”

Cllr Martin Round (Con), who represents Headcorn on Maidstone council, said he had also received complaints about the eggings.

“We get this ‘summer of madness’ every year but we are experiencing this now before the schools break up for the holidays next week.

“There is no way of saying this anymore politely, but Sainsbury’s were a part of this irresponsible recklessness.

“The local branch has failed in its moral social and civic responsibility.

“For years now the local branch of Sainsbury’s does not act on the frequent theft and abusive crime.

“We had around 16,000 people over three days at our Battle of Britain air show and we had an incident then.

“We get tourists from not only from Kent but the wider country as well and it does not bode for our tourism when visitors are affected.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesman promised the store would work closely with the police.

They said: “We understand the concerns that you have raised regarding some local children shoplifting from our Headcorn store along with the disruption and inconvenience this has caused.

“We are unable to remove eggs and flour from display, as this would not be the right thing to do for all of our genuine customers.

“Please be assured that the store is logging all incidents through our internal SMART system which enables us to deploy the right resources where needed and our zone crime and security manager is going to support the store in engaging with the local police.”

The egg-throwing in Headcorn comes at the same time as similar reports of anti-social behaviour involving eggs in neighbouring Staplehurst.

In that case, police seized a car believed to be linked to the eggings after it crashed into a house but have provided no update since.
