Richard O’Brien’s musical comedy the Rocky Horror Show is coming to the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury

Richard O’Brien’s gender-bending musical is back on tour and coming to Canterbury.

The Rocky Horror Show will be at the Marlowe Theatre for six nights of rock ‘n’ roll, fishnet stockings and Time Warp-ing.

The musical is celebrating 50 years of fun and frolics with its latest anniversary tour, which stars Jackie Clune as the Narrator.

The Motherland star, who has also appeared in Dolly Parton musical 9 to 5, will be joining the cast for a six-week stint, which includes dates in Canterbury.

“When the producers asked me to play the Narrator I was thrilled,” says Jackie. “The Rocky Horror Show is such a unique show. I just thought, I cannot say no to Time Warping up and down the country!”

She will join West End star Stephen Webb, who continues to step into the iconic heels of Dr Frank-N-Furter, returning cast member Richard Meek as Brad and Rocky Horror fan favourite Haley Flaherty as Janet.

The musical made its debut at London’s Royal Court Theatre 1973 and was adapted into a feature film starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Meat Loaf and Richard O’Brien in 1975.

Both the show and the film soon gained a cult following, with theatre-goers often dressing up as characters and shouting out well-known one-liners during performances - a tradition which continues today.

“Back in the 1970s when someone asked me to entertain the Christmas staff party at the EMI Film Studios and I turned up with a song called Science Fiction Double Feature,” recalls creator and former Crystal Maze host Richard O’Brien. “Who would have known this was the germ of the idea to turn into today what is the Rocky Horror Show?”

“To be celebrating 50 years is beyond my wildest expectations. The fact that the Rocky Horror show continues to delight audiences as it tours the UK 50 years on is simply thrilling.”

The musical follows newly-engaged couple Brad and Janet as they take a trip to visit an old college professor.

When their car breaks down, they are forced to knock on the door of a nearby house and find themselves swept up in the world of mad scientist Dr Frank-N-Furter and his extraordinary followers.

The Rocky Horror Show will be at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury from Monday, September 4 to Saturday, September 9. Book tickets online here.
