Experience life on the Home Front at this year’s Salute to the ’40s at Chatham Historic Dockyard.

There will be something for all ages to enjoy at the two-day nostalgia event, which this year has an Escape to the Country theme, to remember the thousands of children evacuated during the Blitz.

Members of the Evacuee Reunion Association will be there to share their personal experiences, and Medway’s Three Towns Theatre Company will lead children, each with brown name tags, small suitcases and gas mask boxes, singing We Are Going to the Country as they make their way through the site.

Glamorous vocalist Lola Lamour will be among the musicians performing throughout the weekend on the Spitfire Stage and the Hurricane Stage, both complete with full-size replicas of their namesake aircraft.

Gypsy John’s Dancehall at the Railway Workshop in the Military Zone will be swinging all weekend with lindy hop and jive performances and workshops.

Step back in time at the 1940s Village, featuring a selection of shops, theatre, garage and a bombed-out house, with displays by Home Front re-enactors.

Those who fancy a spot of shopping can visit the vintage fairs, and there will also be an anti-aircraft gun display and parades of vintage civilian and military vehicles.

In addition to the action on the ground, all eyes will be on the skies each day for a 20-minute show by the Kent Spitfire Air Display team.

The event will close each day with a singsong and farewell, as all the performers come together to wave visitors off on their journeys home.
