Walker spots fire on Crab and Winkle Way between Whitstable and Canterbury

A walker called the fire brigade after spotting a fire on a popular off-road cycle and footpath this morning.

The fire was spotted on the Crab and Winkle Way off Radfall Hill between Whitstable and Canterbury at 7am and the fire brigade sent an all terrain vehicle (ATV) to reach it.

A fire brigade spokesman said: “Not all emergency situations have road access so firefighters used an all terrain vehicle to reach the fire.

“These eight wheeled vehicles can get firefighters and equipment to remote and hard to reach areas such as woodlands and moorlands that would be impossible for a traditional heavy fire engine to reach.”

The vehicle can be used to tackle a variety of situations, and is even equipped with its own plough and tracks to get through to fires in difficult terrain during severe weather.

The fire crews put out the fire and left the scene at 9am.
