Town snapper Don Sims described as "helpful gent" after his death is announced by Whitstable Yacht Club

A keen photographer known for taking pictures at community events across Whitstable has died.

The death of Don Sims was announced by the Whitstable Yacht Club on their website where he had been a member.

It reads: "We are sorry to announce that Don Sims passed away on 26th September. Our deepest condolences to his wife Maureen, family and many friends.He will be deeply missed. The wake will be held at the Yacht Club on Tuesday 14th October, details to follow."

He was described on Twitter as a "helpful gent" who built a photo archive through his attendance at town celebrations.

Tankerton ward councillor Neil Baker (Con) posted: "Sorry to hear of the passing of Don Sims, who spent a lot of time capturing a photo archive of Whitstable. Thoughts with his family."

While Susan Hubbard wrote: "Don Sims was a very helpful gent who was in the thick of Whitstable community events with his camera. He will be missed by many."

While trustees at the Whitstable Umbrella Centre added: "We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Don Sims. His wife until recently was a treasured trustee, Don was a key member of the umbrella."
