Whitstable Town boss Keith McMahon looks ahead to his return to VCD Athletic

Whitstable manager Keith McMahon doesn’t think he has a point to prove as he returns to his old stomping ground.

McMahon, who has revived the Oystermen’s fortunes in Isthmian South East this season since taking charge in early October, enjoyed a five-year stay at VCD before parting ways with the club in June 2020.

“I’ve got no point to prove. I think I did a good job there but now I’m focused on this club (Whitstable),” said McMahon, whose 15th-placed team suffered a 1-0 defeat to leaders Hastings on Saturday.

“We know it’s going to be a very tough game.

"The pitch will suit us, but we know we have got to perform. Our away record has been really good.”

McMahon has brought several players to Whitstable since his arrival, including former VCD players Junior Baker, striker Kemo Darboe and wideman Alex Gaggin.

When asked if having so many facing their old club would add a bit of spice to this Saturday’s encounter, he replied: “It’s natural, I think. But nowadays, players do not tend to stay at clubs for that long.

“I’m not making a point that it’s VCD we are facing.

"We know we have to perform in order to get a result, like we would in any other game against any other team.”

McMahon was forced into an early change against Hastings as Baker hobbled off with an ankle injury.

Even with Baker off the pitch, the Oystermen held strong against Hastings at the Belmont until the 84th minute when striker Kenny Pogue scored the only goal in controversial fashion.

McMahon reflected: “We worked really hard in difficult conditions again. We had to withstand a lot of pressure.

“Hastings are a very good side, that’s why they are where they are, but we had a couple of chances as well.

“We were disappointed to concede with around five minutes to go and, looking back, the goal looks very offside but overall I was very proud of the players.”

Three Whitstable players were involved as Kent FA’s under-18s representative side returned to action for the first time in nearly two years on Sunday and enjoyed a comeback win over Essex.

George McIlroy, Alfie Prior and Jeremiah Bamgbose were in Kent's squad which won 5-2 at Aveley.
