Whitstable Town have named former World Cup defender Ian Cox and Wayne Wilson as their new joint-managers.

Ex-Gills player Cox has left his role as first-team coach at Ramsgate while Wilson has given up the captaincy at Faversham to move to the Belmont.

The pair were chosen from a shortlist of three to succeed Simon Halsey, who left a fortnight ago.

Town are in desperate trouble at the foot of Ryman League Division 1 South but chairman Gary Johnson believes he has the right people in charge to lead them to safety.

Mr Johnson said: "The three shortlisted candidates each in turn illustrated desire and passion.

"It really was a close run case in the appointment of Wilson and Cox but the board voted unanimously in this, their third managerial appointment of the season.

"Wilson and Cox have already highlighted immediate targets to join the Oystermen and if they pull these signings off then there is no reason why the Town cannot rise at last."

The new managers take charge for the first time when Whitstable host Bromley in the Kent Senior Cup on Tuesday night (7.45pm).

Wilson started his career with Charlton Athletic, while Cox played at the 2006 World Cup for Trinidad & Tobago.
