Dispersal order issued in Tunbridge Wells after rise in anti-social behaviour

A dispersal order has been put in place to help tackle repeated anti-social behaviour in a town centre.

It means police will be able to take action against people in Tunbridge Wells and in the St John’s area of the town.

The order came into effect at 2pm today and will remain in place until the end of tomorrow.

Police say it has been implemented due to repeated reports a group of young people have been acting anti-socially in the area in recent weeks.

It allows officers to ask anyone causing a nuisance to move on, and arrest anyone returning to the area once dispersed.

Inspector Christian Mayers, from the west Kent community safety unit, said: “There have been a number of reports of young people behaving anti-socially in Tunbridge Wells and allegations have included under-age street drinking, and reports of children throwing items at members of the public and being verbally aggressive.

“We are concerned about the detrimental impact on the quality of life of the community as a result of the behaviour and are increasing visible policing in response.’
