Flood alerts issued in Canterbury, Ashford and Maidstone

Flood alerts have been issued across the county following two days of heavy rainfall.

The warnings are in place for Grove Ferry, on the outskirts of Canterbury near the Great Stour, and from Hothfield through to the centre of Ashford.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for Grove Ferry

The Environment Agency says flooding is possible near the Great Stour between 2pm and 5pm this afternoon and during subsequent high tides tomorrow.

The government body added: "River levels have risen as a result of high rainfall over the Stour catchment coinciding with spring tides.

"We do not anticipate flooding of property at this stage.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and our incident response staff are checking our defences and structures.

"Please avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses."

The Environment Agency believed there could be flooding at East Farleigh lock and through the centre of Maidstone

The Environment Agency says the levels at the Upper River Stour, from Hothfield to Ashford, will "remain high, but stable" today.

An alert is still in place along the River Medway, where there has been flooding of a footpath in Lockmeadow and subways in the centre of Maidstone.

Levels are expected to fall gradually throughout the day, but still remain high.
