Flood warning along River Medway in Maidstone

The Government has issued a flood warning for land next to the River Medway.

Lockmeadow and the riverbank walks at Maidstone are at particular risk after recent heavy rain has caused water levels to rise.

There could be flooding at East Farleigh lock and through Maidstone town centre

But a warning is in place for all the lower Medway from Hampstead Lock at Yalding to Allington Lock, including East Farleigh, Wateringbury, Teston and Teston Park, Tovil, and Maidstone Millennium Park.

Although it has stopped raining today, there is still a high risk of flooding as it takes time for rainfall to run off fields and into the river.

It is not predicted that the flooding will be extensive enough to affect properties, but the situation is being closely monitored.

Meanwhile the West Kent Befriending Service has had to cancel its planned Christmas Cruise on the river with 35 elderly people tomorrow, Saturday, after the owner of the Kentish Lady, Nick Kennedy, said the river levels were too high.

Organised Wendy Pfeiffer said: "It's a big disappointment. Will we will organise a replacement trip - but it won't be until after Christmas now."
