Bus drivers have helped raise £2,600 in memory of a colleague who died of cancer.

This was achieved through a charity fun day, which included a football match.

Stagecoach South East driver Philip Hayes, 67, from Dover, passed away from prostate cancer last November.

The fun day was at Deal Town Football Club at St Leonard's Road on September 26 and 250 people attended.

The money raised will be split between Prostate Cancer UK, Breast Cancer Now, and the Viking Day Care Unit for cancer patients at the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate.

The event was organised by Glen Clark, 35, from Deal, who is based at Stagecoach's Dover depot as Mr Hayes was.

He said: “Phil had worked for the company for a long time and we wanted to raise money to help find ways to beat this horrible disease.

“We’re over the moon with how much we raised. It was a very successful day, and we gained a lot more than we expected.”

All players in the match were Stagecoach South East drivers and the teams were created from the two depots they came from, Canterbury and Dover.

The final score was 3-3.

The eight-hour fun day also had a raffle, stalls, bouncy castles and face painting.

Mr Hayes was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in February 2018 but it was too aggressive to treat successfully.

He had worked for Stagecoach in Dover since 1997, where he met his wife Andrea Hayes who still works with the company.
