A man accused of murder after a shooting in a quiet residential street in broad daylight is expected to go on trial for murder in September.

The 54-year-old, who was appearing by CCTV link from Elmley Prison, was asked by the clerk: "Are you Jeffrey Mills?"

He replied: "I am."

He is expected to claim self-defence, Judge David Griffith- Jones QC was told.

Prosecutor Martin Yale told the court during the five minute hearing, that the trial is expected to take 10 days and there was no application for bail.

Mr Yale told the judge that a knife was recovered at the scene and is being forensically examined.

Mr Jenkins' death is the third alleged murder in Maidstone in less than three months, following the killings of 19-year-old Parwin Quriashi on Christmas Day and Wesley Adyinka on February 10.
