Beach hut on Sheppey on sale for £32,000

A beach hut on Sheppey has gone on the market for £32,000.

It is one of 50 on offer on the beach-huts.com website where prices range from £900 for a hut on Mundesley Beach in Norfolk to a luxury bolt-hole at Christchurch in Dorset for £79,950.

Leysdown's beach huts

The price makes it one of the most expensive in Kent although it has no running water or electricity and no one is allowed to sleep in it overnight.

Brian Spoor, who chairs the Sheerness Town Team, said: “I can’t believe this. It is great putting Sheppey on the tourist map alongside places like Whitstable and the huts are all pretty.

"But it seems an awful lot of money for what is just a shed with no water or electricity.”

He added: “You can buy a comfortable mobile home for that sort of money with its own bed and a toilet.”

The owner, who did not want to be named, confirmed the hut is one of 20 built by Swale council on Leysdown seafront two years ago.

But she insisted: “This is a private sale. I would prefer my business not be be broadcast in Kent.”

She confirmed she bought it two years ago. If it makes its price tag it will represent a three-fold return on the original £10,000 purchase price.

There is nothing to identify which hut is for sale.

Owners must pay a yearly ground rent of £400 to Swale council which has built 55 huts on Sheppey, including 35 at The Leas at Minster.

It has a waiting list of more than 400, proving Sheppey beach huts are now in high demand.

Whitstable has huts going for £52,500, £35,000 and £27,500.

Swale council is preparing a new beach hut policy which is expected to go before councillors in December where plans for more huts are likely to be discussed.
