A20 Coldharbour Roundabout in Maidstone to close overnight for more than two weeks

A well-used roundabout is set to shut overnight for more than two weeks.

The A20 Coldharbour Roundabout in Maidstone will be closed as part of a £5m project.

It is now three months into the A20 improvement scheme, which is set to be completed by mid-December.

The project will see the junction enlarged from two lanes to three around the roundabout, with additional lanes provided on the approaches.

Kent County Council (KCC) says it will help reduce congestion in the area and boost air quality.

So far, contractors Breheny has been working on digging out the foundations for a new footpath and verge to the side of the roundabout.

A temporary concrete barrier was installed to separate workers from the traffic.

In March, dozens of trees were felled to make way for an attenuation tank, which will reduce the threat of flooding.

The latest change saw all of the traffic lights removed and Give Way lines implemented.

However, some councillors have claimed that this has caused more than a dozen near-misses already.

This week it was announced that Coldharbour Lane will be shut in both directions overnight.

It is the road that connects the roundabout to the Aylesford Interchange, which leads onto the M20.

Motorists wanting to use Junction 5 of the motorway to access London Road will not be able to do so during this time.

However, both the east and west roundabout approaches will remain open.

The closure will allow for drainage works, a site clearance and the placement of asphalt.

Lanes leading up to the roundabout will also be altered for the next phase of construction.

The works will take place from Tuesday, May 28 until Saturday, June 15, between the hours of 8pm and 6am.

KCC has confirmed a diversion route will be in place, with drivers being directed via symbolised signage.

A full roundabout closure is set to take place between Monday, July 22 and Saturday, August 10.
