A mum is appealing for people to give up their time and some supplies too so her disabled daughter can play in the garden.

Hannah Taylor, five, has cerebral palsy and all her mum wants is to see her play safely with her big brother Freddie Ryall, eight.

Now a passing chat while helping others means Joanne Salt, of Pepys Close, Dartford, may be able to turn that dream into a reality.

She was one of the army of volunteers who helped the BBC TV programme DIY SOS rebuild Garry and Kyle Ratcliffe’s home on the Isle of Sheppey, so it was suitable for the needs of their four adopted children, who have a range of disabilities and complex needs.

Garry is executive head teacher of Oakfield Primary Academy and Temple Hill Primary Academy in Dartford.

While working on the project Miss Salt got talking to a man who she thought was another volunteer.

The 30-year-old said: “I wanted to help the Ratcliffes as much as I could and I spent four or five days there.

“I got talking to a man about my situation. As I live in a council house they will only do the essentials to the garden like making it accessible for a wheelchair but my daughter still can’t use it.

“She’s going to get an electric wheelchair soon but it won’t be able to go on the grass because it’s all uneven and full on stones.

“I’m a single parent I haven’t got the funds to be able to redo the garden.

“I had no idea that the man I was talking to was Antony Henn, the man who designed the Ratcliffes’ garden.

“He offered to design a garden for me. I was shocked.”

Mr Henn contacted Miss Salt a few weeks ago and asked if she still wanted him to redesign her garden and she jumped at the chance.

Miss Salt is now appealing for local businesses and volunteers to get in touch to help build the garden once the plans are complete.

She said: “To just see her be able to interact with her brother, and friends and family, would be amazing.

“She can’t use the grass even now because it’s full of stones and gravel and it’s uneven.”
