Shoppers in Dover 'stand still' as disturbance unfolds in Biggin Street

A man was restrained in a town centre after a disturbance.

Police were called to Biggin Street in Dover after an incident occurred outside Boots at around 1pm.

An eye witness said the "the whole street stood still" as a van driver and security guard held a man to the ground until police arrived.

The witness, who didn't want to be named, said: "The van driver restrained him on the floor with the help of the security man from Boots.

"It looked like it was getting out of hand so they let him go.

"But police arrived within three to four minutes and he was arrested outside Peacocks."

A total of six officers were reported to have been at the scene travelling in two cars and a van.

She added: "The whole street just stood still, wondering what was going on."

A spokesman said: "Kent Police was called to a report of a man causing a disturbance in Biggin Street, Dover just after 1pm on Friday, July 5 2019.

"Officers attended the scene where a 39-year-old man from Dover was arrested on suspicion of assault and possession of drugs.

"He currently remains in custody while enquiries are ongoing."
