Car collides with Brenchley House, Week Street, Maidstone which houses Society Rooms Wetherspoon

A vehicle has hit a pedestrian and smashed into a packed town centre pub.

The car, driven by a man believed to be in his 70s, hit a woman and careered into the glass-fronted Society Rooms Wetherspoon's at Brenchley House, Maidstone, just before 3pm this afternoon.

The pedestrian went to Maidstone Hospital of her own accord reporting some discomfort in her leg.

After hitting the woman the silver Mercedes flattened a street sign and shattered a window of the pub on the corner of Week Street and Station Road - the second time a pane has been broken by a car in the last six months.

Shift manager Matt Bion said: "I was upstairs in the office doing some work when someone came up and told me a car had crashed into the front of the pub. I thought 'that's a rubbish joke' and when I realised it was serious I thought 'oh no, not again.'

"It happened six months ago when someone was reversing from St Francis Catholic Church opposite and smashed a window.

"You have to hit it with some force as the windows are reinforced."

Nigel Peak, who was at the pub when the incident happened, said: "I was sitting in the pub with a mate who was facing the window and said there was a car coming towards us. Suddenly there was a bang and the glass shattered inside.

"Police took the man inside and breathalyzed him, he was elderly, probably around 70."

Kent Police confirmed that officers were still in attendance but that no arrests had been made.

A spokesman for the force added: "A woman was slightly injured and took herself to hospital reporting some pain in her leg."

A South East Coat Ambulance Service spokesman said: "An ambulance car attended the scene at 2.45pm to reports of a man hitting a pedestrian. No one was taken to hospital and the vehicle left after 20 minutes."

The window has since been boarded up.
