Police are investigating whether incidents in which pupils were approached by a man in Chatham are linked.

On Wednesday a young girl was approached by a man in Princes Avenue and a police spokesman said they had also received two separate reports of a suspicious male by pupils at Greenacre School on November 24.

The spokesman confirmed they are investigating whether these two incidents are linked.

The girl was unharmed in the incident which took place around 7am on Wednesday, and the man is thought to have left the area in a car described as white or silver, having a dent in a door and possibly with dark rear windows.

He is described as a white man, aged in his 40s, of average build, with short, dark hair, a round face and a possibly had a drooping eye.

He was wearing a dark coloured jumper or coat, and dark coloured trousers.

Investigating officer PC Caroline Morton said: "The girl did the right thing by not engaging in conversation and walking away to let someone know that she had been approached by a stranger.

"PCSOs are targeting their foot patrols in the area and around local schools to provide reassurance and to talk to anyone who has any concerns about this incident."

It comes days after the head teacher of Walderslade Girls School sent a letter home to parents after she was informed by police there may be a suspicious male in the area.

Louise McGowan told KentOnline: "If I receive any information from the police I think it's my duty to act on that, not to cause panic and hysteria, but to make sure everyone in my school community is extra vigilant."

The letter said that a report had been sent out of a man dressed in a full black suit, black shoes and with his face covered up to his eyes.

It said that two pupils had reported that they were followed on their way home by this person.

A police spokesman said: "On 4 December police received a report that two girls felt concerned that they were being followed by a man as they walked home from school in the area of Prince Charles Avenue."

This incident is not thought to be linked to the incidents reported on November 24 and December 10.
