Multiple passengers can be seen stranded and stood at the back of the platform following the blaze.

One passenger said they were told the fire was due to a brake problem with the train - which was heading towards Tonbridge and then Sevenoaks.

The fire has been put out, but a number of services have been cancelled from Paddock Wood.

A spokeswoman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: “We was called at 9.35am today (February 8) to reports of smoke coming from a train at Paddock Wood railway station in Station Road.

“Four fire engines attended, however no action was required from crews.

“No injuries were reported, and it’s believed the smoke was caused by overheated machinery.”

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for British Transport Police (BTP) added: “Officers attended, alongside Fire and Rescue, and the train was evacuated.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

Speaking at 11.40am, Southeastern confirmed the broken down train had been moved clear of the platform.

Less than one hour later it announced trains were running normally.
