Sheppey dad with inoperable brain tumour looks at treatments as GoFundMe page nears £100,000

A father with a brain tumour has started considering potential treatments - and an online fundraiser set up in his name is close to reaching £100,000.

Rick Smith was diagnosed with an inoperable tumour in March after originally going to the doctor with headaches.

The 39-year-old, from Minster, on Sheppey, was told the devastating news that he had 15 months to live.

Upon hearing the prognosis, friends and family rallied together to raise funds in the hopes of fighting back.

A GoFundMe page was set up under the banner of “Rick’s army - cancer will not win” asking for £50,000 but within three days had reached £78,000.

The total sum now sits at just under £100,000, with more than 2,900 donations in 26 days.

Rick’s fiance Katrina Binfield has been keeping people informed on TikTok, posting medical updates as well as videos of the couple with their three children Louie, Karson and Arlo.

The make-up artist relayed her thanks to all those who have supported them.

She said: “Thank you for the support and love me and Ricky have received over the last few days.

“We are really overwhelmed with the amount of support, donations, and everything that has been going on.

“I just wanted to say thank you I am grateful as we are trying to deal with it all.

“You’re all appreciated but thank you we love you all.”

Since being given the diagnosis, Rick has had a biopsy to determine what kind of tumour was in his head.

It was first thought to be a butterfly glioblastoma but has since been found to be a grade-3 astroblastoma – a similar form of tumour but much rarer.

His results have been sent to professionals both in Germany and Ireland in hopes of finding the best treatment possible.

Last week, the couple also had appointments with clinicians in Lithuania, Spain and Germany.

He also saw a homeopath on Sunday, April 7 who was recommended to Katrina by Kelsey Parker, wife of Tom Parker, the former lead singer for the band The Wanted who died in March 2022 after also being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Rick’s family in Southampton has set up a family fun day fundraiser on April 27 with live music, a BBQ and games planned, with a number of people from Kent due to attend.

The money raised will go to help fight Rick’s tumour as well as help him create memories with his family.
