Petition calls for 20mph limit in St James Ward in Tunbridge Wells

A resident of St James ward in Tunbridge Wells is fed up with speeding traffic.

Chris Stevenson has decided to try to get something done and has launched an online petition calling for a 20mph limit.

20mph limits are popping up all over - why not in St James?

Mr Stevenson, of Western Road, said: "The speed and volume of traffic is becoming dangerous and it's a matter of when - not if - someone is seriously injured.

"If enough people sign, we may be able to persuade KCC, the highways authority, to do something about it."

Mr Stevenson said the statistics showed there had already been 22 accidents involving a car and a pedestrian in the area between 2016 and 2019.

He said: "Any resident here knows how cars, vans, and lorries treat the area with a complete lack of care, often using the roads like a drag strip.

"Speeding in the area makes it dangerous for our children, elderly and most vulnerable to walk or cycle in their journeys."

"It's just common sense.."

"If a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle at 20mph they at least have a 97% chance of survival."

The petition calls for a 20mph limit on all residential roads in St James, with signage, illuminated speed warning signs and traffic calming measures.

Richard Bysouth supports the campaign. He said: "This shouldn't require a petition - it's just common sense."
