Two "good samaritans" died after they stopped to help a motorist in an overturned car near Swanley.

Motorist John Kelly had lost control of his vehicle in a rainstorm on the A20 in November 2018.

A jury at Maidstone Crown Court heard how as he called police, other motorists stopped to help.

It was then a Mercedes driven by Andre Robinson, of Bruges Court, Kemsley, near Sittingbourne, went past and hit two of the good samaritans.

Victims Raymond Bridges, 54, and Stephen Ball, 25, died from their injuries and the road was closed for more than 12 hours.

Prosecutor Ian Hope said conditions had been "terrible" on November 20, 2018, at 11am and some motorists reported a "white out" with surface water on the carriageway.

He said motorist Robert Webb was the first to encounter problems while driving his Ford Mondeo at 65mph.

"He slowed and would say he felt as if he was hit by a 'white out' and his vehicle left the road and went onto a grass verge. Fortunately he was unhurt," he said.

"He was on the phone to the emergency services when he became aware of another incident behind him.

He then began to walk towards the other vehicles when he saw a Vauxhall Astra, driven by Mr Kelly, who had come up from Sheerness, collide with a white van.

The prosecutor added Mr Kelly said his vehicle began sliding before overturning and trapping him inside, although he was uninjured.

A BMW, driven by off-duty police officer Ben Sommer, told how he had been driving in heavy rain at 60 to 65mph before breaking and finding his vehicle sliding, assuming he had hit standing water.

He managed to stop on the verge and got out uninjured and saw another vehicle on its roof, the court heard.

Mr Hope said it was almost two minutes after Mr Kelly had called police, that the Mercedes drove past "at speed" and struck Mr Bridges and Mr Ball as they were helping Mr Kelly, he claimed.

Robinson has denied two charges of causing death by careless driving and the trial continues.
