Man hit by van died on A2 between A2050 at Bridge and A260 at Aylesham

A man hit and killed by a van on the A2 was a 28-year-old from Folkestone, police have confirmed.

Police launched an appeal for witnesses after the tragic incident on the coastbound carriageway at Barham on Friday.

Emergency crews raced to the site after the man was struck by a Citroen Relay van at 4.05am.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and the road was closed by serious crash investigators.

Detectives had not established the man's identity when the road reopened nine hours after the accident.

But they confirmed this morning he has since been identified and his next of kin informed.

An investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his death is still ongoing.

The driver of the van was spoken to by police at the scene before being taken to Ashford's William Harvey hospital to be checked over.
