Fire in disused amusement arcade at Dreamland, Margate

Firefighters have been at tackling a blaze at Dreamland today.

The fire broke out in a disused amusement arcade at the Margate site, with crews were called to the Eton Road entrance at 10.50am.

The affected building was being renovated as part of the Dreamland development.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "On arrival crews were faced with a fire in the roof space of a former amusement arcade.

"Firefighters used axes and cutters to access the fire in the two-storey building.

"They then used a hose reel jet and a main jet for cover and a 13.5 metre ladder to extinguish the blaze.

"Crews then dampened down. The cause of the fire is accidental."

They left the scene just before 11.30am.

Dreamland spokesman Fiona Russell said: "There has been a small fire on Dreamland’s Buffet Building roof during maintenance stemming from hot works igniting old timbers in the structure.

"The fire was put out before the emergency services arrived, health and safety was adhered to at all times and nobody was hurt.

"We would like to thank the prompt response and professionalism of the Kent Fire and Rescue Service."

Work is currently being carried out to restore the site to its former glory. The heritage attraction is due to open next month.

It is the latest bout of bad luck for the project. In December, part of the iconic scenic railway was brought down by strong winds.

The rollercoaster was in the process of being re-built after falling into disrepair following the park's closure in 2005 - which was worsened by a devastating fire in 2008.
