Two fire engines were sent after reports of a vehicle alight at around 5pm, with crews spending nearly 30 minutes tackling the blaze.

Officers closed the road to allow the removal of an oil spillage at the scene by KCC Highways.

A picture taken by a passer-by showed what appeared to be the charred remains of the vehicle.

Traffic queues stretched back for more than four miles towards Maidstone, as far as the Shell garage on Detling Hill.

Drivers heading towards Sheppey were told to expect long delays, with journeys taking an extra 45 minutes.

As of around 7.45pm, all lanes were said to have reopened.

The fire service has confirmed no casualties were reported and the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
