Whether you’re looking for a winter escape or something to banish the post-Christmas blues, this year’s Good Hotel Guide has 10 fantastic Kent destinations to choose from.

The list, which includes top recommended hotels from around the UK, features everything from boutique pubs to historic castles in its top picks from the county.

Albion House, Ramsgate

This clifftop hotel has one of the most enviable views of any on this list. Looking out over the Ramsgate beach and harbour, this boutique hotel gives guests the chance to make the most of its location with plenty of sea view and balcony rooms, as well as suites and accessible ground floor rooms. The food and drink options have recently been refreshed, with an extended wine line, expertly made cocktails and a Georgian restaurant serving seasonal dishes and locally sourced fish.

Good Hotel Guide review: “This chic and stylish small hotel in a restored Regency building has an enviable clifftop position overlooking the beach and Royal Harbour. Owners Ben and Emma Irvine have retained the building’s grandeur – in the past it was favoured by politicians, actors, even Princess Victoria – in the high ceilings, ornate cornices and carved fireplaces but added modern elegance.”

Details: Albion Place, Ramsgate CT11 8HQ. Prices for a queen room with sea view and breakfast included on Saturday, January 14 start from £150 per night. Find out more here.

Alkham Court, Dover

This might not be one to cure the January blues as, unfortunately, this hotel closes from November to January. However, you can still give yourself a little winter pick-me-up now and book something for the spring, as Alkham Court is well worth a visit. The family run farmhouse offers an award-winning Kentish breakfast with views of the rolling Kent Downs, room extras such as flowers, robes and slippers, and a hot tub and sauna to give guests the ultimate relaxing getaway.

Good Hotel Guide review: “Home-made cake is the welcome treat from ‘wonderful, engaging’ Wendy and Neil Burrows at their award-winning Alkham valley farmhouse B&B, and their warm thoughtfulness lasts for the entire stay.”

Details: Meggett Lane, South Alkham, Dover CT15 7DG. There’s a two-night stay minimum, and a stay in the Badger Room with a super king size bed on Saturday, March 4 costs £340. Find out more here.

Castle House Guest House, Dover

The Good Hotel Guide review isn’t available online for this hotel just yet, but it only takes one look at the charming location and cosy rooms to see why it made the list in the first place. This bed and breakfast hotel is close to the iconic White Cliffs of Dover and overlooked by the historic Dover Castle, with easy access to ferry services from the busy port if you’re planning on crossing the Channel. There is a full English breakfast available, and the owners are happy to add special extras for those on a romantic getaway or celebrating an occasion, giving this seaside hotel the personal touch.

Details: 10 Castle Hill Road, Dover CT16 1QW. Prices for a deluxe double room with breakfast included on Saturday, January 14 start from £95 per night. Find out more here.

The Dog at Wingham, Canterbury

This gourmet gastropub just outside of Canterbury has been a favourite with locals for years. Owner Marc Brigden has created a cosy culinary destination, led by head chef Rob Mantegna, serving a high-end menu of modern British food, from wild mushroom wellington to bone marrow butter. The bar is stocked with locally brewed ales, more than 40 gins and English wine. When it comes to staying over, the eight guest rooms are inviting, luxurious and unique - and there’s even a family suite if you’re bringing the kids.

Good Hotel Guide review: “More a stylish gastropub than a community hub, this historic inn has a following of foodies, who rave about its ‘delicious meals’. Drink and dine in a lounge bar with tub chairs and a log-burner, and when you’re dog-tired, head up to one of the stylish bedrooms, where plain paint finishes are enlivened by jazzy cushions and headboards.”

Details: Canterbury Road, Wingham, Canterbury, CT3 1BB. Prices for a king double room with breakfast included on Saturday, January 14 start from £220 per night. Find out more here.

Hever Castle B&B, Edenbridge

You really will feel like royalty if you book a break at this historic castle. The rooms are the epitome of grandeur, with suites offering Romanesque beds, roll top baths, ornate pillars and views of the apple orchard and castle. Stay in the Astor Wing or Anne Boleyn Wing, both Edwardian wings of the castle built in Tudor style, and enjoy the lounge, billiard room and buffet breakfast, all included. Your overnight stay also includes tickets to Hever Castle and its gardens, to which hotel guests have exclusive out-of-hours access.

Good Hotel Guide review: “If Anne Boleyn could return to her childhood home, she would be astonished to find a ‘wonderful B&B for history lovers’, housed in a ‘Tudor village’ in landscaped parkland with Italian garden, Japanese tea house and 35-acre lake.”

The Pig at Bridge Place, Canterbury

The quirky accommodation at this former music venue, which has seen legends such as Led Zeppelin pass through its doors, mirrors the building’s artsy history. The rooms range from Extremely Small to Hop Pickers’ Huts and have held onto much of the building’s original charm, including its secret stairways and hidden nooks and crannies. The open-plan kitchen lets visitors watch the expert team of Pig chefs as they prepare their meal, and the kitchen garden houses the Potting Sheds where you can unwind with a soothing spa treatment.

Good Hotel Guide review: “A short hop from Canterbury, a Grade I listed Jacobean mansion and former music venue that once hosted rock legends such as The Kinks was the sixth addition to Robin Hutson’s Pig collection. Styled by Judy Hutson, it is wildly atmospheric with ‘lots of gorgeous snug areas’.”

Details: Bourne Park Road, Bridge, Canterbury CT4 5BH. There’s no weekend availability in January, but prices for a midweek stay in a Comfy Luxe room on Wednesday, January 11 start from £360. Find out more here.

The Mount Edgcumbe, Tunbridge Wells

It’s another review that the Good Hotel Guide is holding back for readers of the book only, but thankfully this boutique pub hotel speaks for itself. The Mount Edgumbe has six luxury bedrooms, all of which have their own individual design and are filled with unique items and antiques from all over the world. If it’s unseasonably warm when you visit you can spend some time in the beer garden, but it’s more likely you’ll be cosied up in the pub’s sandstone cave with a drink and food from the British-European gastropub menu.

Details: The Common, Tunbridge Wells TN4 8BX. Prices for a super king room with breakfast included on Saturday, January 14 start from £220 per night. Find out more here.

The chef uses produce from local businesses such as Wealden Smokery and Bodiam Ice Cream to create top quality dishes in the much-loved restaurant.

Good Hotel Guide review: “Old-meets-new in this revived 16th-century coaching inn with a large front patio, in a historic Wealden village. Against a backdrop of beams, brick walls, and velvet wingback chairs, Kentish wines, ales and ciders headline the drinks list in the bar.”

Read’s, Faversham

It makes sense that this elusive fine dining restaurant and manor hotel, which can be found tucked sneakily away behind the bustling A2 in Faversham, isn’t part of the Good Hotel Guide’s online reviews for all to see. You’ll need to get the book to see what the guide says, but you can get a pretty good idea of what to expect here from the four poster beds, spacious walk-in shower and views of the immaculate lawns and kitchen garden. The elegant Georgian restaurant is led by Michelin-starred chef David Pitchford and serves locally sourced dishes with an extensive wine list.

Details: Macknade Manor, Canterbury Road, Faversham ME13 8XE. Prices for a double room with breakfast included start from £230 per night. To book, call 01795 535344 or email enquiries@reads.com.

The ancient woodland and Elizabethan Tower are worth exploring during your stay, but don’t forget to make time for breakfast and the afternoon tea and cake included with your stay.

Good Hotel Guide review: “A draw for garden-lovers, this serene Victorian farmhouse B&B is sheltered by a National Trust estate of ancient woodland, farmland and Vita Sackville-West’s acclaimed gardens. Country-style bedrooms mix contemporary and period furniture; large windows look out at the estate or towards Sissinghurst Castle’s Elizabethan tower.”
