But a police spokesman said today: "A 58-year-old man who was reported missing from the Dover area on January 5 has been safely located."

Mr McConnell's disappearance had resulted in an extensive search.

By Friday, teams from Deal, Langdon Battery and Folkestone Coastguard and Kent Search and Rescue helped police comb the area for him.

A helicopter was also seen and was thought to be part of the search.

That day, Kent Police Insp Stephen Moat said: "We are particularly concerned for Brian’s welfare and are appealing to anyone who has seen him or knows where he might be to contact us."
