Ashford missed out on the chance to progress in the RFU Junior Vase with a 21-18 second round defeat after extra-time to Battersea Ironsides on Saturday.

The hosts squandered a 13-0 half-time lead and went out to a penalty scored in the first period of extra-time, leaving coach Dai Fussell disappointed.

He said "Battersea deserved to win, our set pieces were poor.

"We gave away too much possession and made too many mistakes."

Centre Joe Lakin and scrum-half Shane Bushell scored Ashford’s two tries, with JJ Murray kicking a conversion and two penalties.

He was also unlucky to strike a post with another kick, and his conversion of Bushell’s try, to win the game, shaved the upright.

Fifth-placed Ashford return to Kent 1 action this weekend, hoping to extend their unbeaten four-match league run with a trip to West Wickham to face Beccehamian.
