Ashford United are still waiting to discover whether they will play Safety Net Kent League football in their debut season.

The newly-formed club have been accepted into the football pyramid by the FA but are waiting to hear whether they will play in the inaugural Step 6 Division which will bridge the gap between the Kent League and Kent County League.

Mike Appleby, the FA’s head of leagues and competitions, revealed the constitution of the new league should be ratified by the end of next week – although flexibility will be ensured to allow Ashford to take part, should their application to the Kent League prove unsuccessful.

Homelands chief executive Paul Bowden-Brown (pictured) said: "All I have ever said is that we are glad to be playing football next season after being accepted into the National Leagues by the FA. Obviously we want to play as high as we can but wherever they put us will be the right place."

He added: "If we are placed into Step 6 then we’ll just try to gain promotion as soon as we can to try and continue the upward progression of the club."

Mr Appleby revealed the FA’s alliance committee will meet to work on the constitution next Tuesday and the leagues committee will then meet to ratify it on Friday.
