Ashford athlete Janine Brown has returned from the World Police and Fire Games in Vancouver with a full set of medals.

Brown’s aim of retaining the half-marathon title she won in Australia two years earlier was achieved in some style when she smashed her previous personal best by two minutes to take gold in 1hr26min22sec.

To cap a memorable stay, the Ashford AC member took silver in the 5km cross-country event (19.51) and bronze in the 5,000m on the track (18.45).

She also achieved a fifth-place finish, running the 1,500m in 5.04.

Brown, who is preparing for the Berlin Marathon which takes place on September 20, had to contend with difficult conditions in Vancouver.

She said: "It was a tough week for me because I’m doing 60-mile weeks at the moment in the build-up for Berlin.

"At the beginning of the Games temperatures were in the 30s, while in the half-marathon it rained the whole way which didn’t help some of the trail paths we ran on for part of the course."

Brown is now hoping to earn selection for the World Police Marathon Championships in Prague next May.
