The child, who was a pedestrian, was assessed by paramedics and taken to the William Harvey Hospital.

Their injuries are not described as life threatening or life changing, say police.

The road, which forms part of the town's ring road, is still partially blocked in both directions.

The accident happened between Lidl and the 'bolt' roundabout in Elwick Road.
