Five quizzed after shooting incident

DETECTIVES in Ashford were today questioning five men after a disturbance which resulted in one man being shot and another being slashed with a sharp weapon.

Police officers, some of them armed, went to a house in Wootton Road at about 6.45pm last night after reports of a disturbance and shots being fired. They discovered two men with non-life threatening injuries.

One had a gunshot wound on his left arm and the other had a slash wound.

Three men were arrested at the scene. Police said they were unable to speak English. The two injured men were taken to Ashford's William Harvey Hospital.

Later a police spokeswoman said the number of people in custody had risen to five. It is thought one is an Englishman from Ashford and the others are of Eastern European origin.

A Kent police spokesman said he could not confirm reports that the men involved were asylum seekers.
