Folkestone could find themselves back on top of Ryman League Division 1 South on Saturday evening – despite their expected 10-point deduction by the Ryman League committee on Thursday.

Tuesday night’s 2-1 success at Chatham means that, even taking into account their 10-point punishment for having to set up a Creditors Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) because of their £170,000 debts, Invicta will regain top spot by defeating high-flying Croydon Athletic at the Buzzlines Stadium this Saturday.

If they manage that feat it will represent the latest twist in what is turning into a remarkable season for manager Neil Cugley and his side.

Cugley said: "We said in the team talk before Tuesday’s game that if we could win the next two matches we would be back on top despite the points deduction, and we are halfway there now."

Pre-season title favourites Croydon will surely be a different propositionand are finally living up to that billing after a mixed first half of the campaign.

Cugley, whose side are away to Dulwich on Tuesday, added: "Everybody made Croydon favourites to win it and they have got the squad and the financial resources to push on now.

"But we are going to try to hang in there like we have done all season."

There will be free admission on Saturday, with the club making the game a memorial for Rifleman Peter Aldridge, who was killed in Afghanistan last month and whose family moved from Croydon to Folkestone two years ago.

Supporters will be asked to make a donation to the Help the Heroes charity and there will be a minute’s silence before the game.
