Ashford's Game shop is moving to a new space inside Sports Direct and is set to open before the end of the week.

The move comes as the current store in New Rents will be knocked down if a new 92-bed hotel is built in the town centre.

While an exact opening date has not been confirmed, staff kitting out the new space, which is near the tills in Sports Direct, hope to have it ready by the end of the week.

If the hotel project is approved, developers want to demolish a row of six shops in New Rents, including the former Game store, to construct a four-storey site in their place.

PDSA, Betfred, British Heart Foundation, and the ex-HomePlus unit are also earmarked for demolition, as well as the former Pet Essentials store which is now Khises-Posh Creatives (KPC) Events.

The operator of the hotel is not yet known, but it will offer three to four-star accommodation.

Ten flats are also included in the development, which will be accessed via Drum Lane.

Parking will not be provided on site for hotel guests, but bosses say there is an agreement in place with the operators of the County Square car park which will allow visitors to use that facility.

Twelve parking spaces are proposed on the site for residents living in the flats.

Developers say the ground floor of the building will form the reception area for the hotel as well as the bar and restaurant.

The first and second floors of the unit will be exclusively for hotel use, with the third floor earmarked for mixed hotel and residential, and the fourth floor exclusively for residential use.

Amended plans were submitted in January which show changes to the shape of the roof on the corner of the building which will now be sloped.

The size of some windows have been reduced and more greenery has been added to the courtyard area with trellises and climbing plants.

In Folkestone, Game has already moved from the high street to Sports Direct.

It comes after Mike Ashley, owner of Sports Direct, bought stakes in the company as part of a £52m deal in 2019.
