Junel Miah accused of causing death of Xpress Games boss Danyl Ponsford by dangerous driving at Somerset Road, Ashford

A 26-year-old Ashford shop boss died after being struck by a car driven at more than two-and-a-half times the speed limit, a jury heard.

Danyl Ponsford, the 26-year-old manager of Xpress Games in North Street, died after being hit by in Somerset Road last September.

Junel Miah, 28, of Magazine Road, has denied causing his death by driving dangerously but he has pleaded guilty to causing death by driving carelessly.

The crash was caught, in part, on CCTV and the jury at Canterbury Crown Court was warned by the judge to “steel themselves as it might be harrowing to watch”.

Prosecutor Piers Knowle-Reed told how Mr Ponsford had gone to Domino’s Pizza on the A292 Ashford ring road.

He said he had collected the pizza and had placed it on the passenger’s seat of his red Toyota Celica.

The prosecutor said that he then made “what might be described as an ill-advised manoeuvre” by crossing over the four-lane road to return home from the direction he had come.

But before he could complete it, his vehicle was struck by Miah’s VW Golf.

Miah later said the vehicle belonged to his brother and he was taking it to leave it at the home of a mechanic awaiting an MOT, with a view to possibly buying it later.

Mr Knowle-Reed told the jury that experts for both the prosecution and defence had agreed that at the time of the horrific accident, Miah’s car was travelling at between 70 to 80mph on the 30mph road.

After his arrest, Miah is alleged to have told police officers that he had been travelling at between 25-30 mph.

The prosecutor said that the Crown did not accept Miah had been driving carelessly but dangerously as his standard fell “far below” the standard expected of a competent and careful driver.

The trial continues.
