CCTV footage captures drunk clubber driving on pavements in Ashford town centre

Shocking CCTV footage shows a drunk clubber driving on pavements in a town centre before hitting a traffic island and losing a hubcap.

Ashmit Limbu was spotted weaving his silver VW Golf around Ashford after stumbling out of a club during the early hours.

He was so intoxicated he could barely drive the vehicle properly, mounting a grass verge to reach another road and almost hitting a shopfront.

His drunken antics were witnessed by a passerby who spotted the 29-year-old leaving a venue “barely able to walk”.

The member of the public was so shocked he had started to drive that she and her partner got in their vehicle and followed Limbu’s car at a safe distance while calling the police.

Officers were able to alert CCTV operators in the town who located Limbu’s vehicle and followed its route with their cameras during the incident on Saturday, February 18.

They saw him driving him on numerous roads in the town centre, including North Street and Edinburgh Road, where he drove across a patch of grass to join New Street.

Eventually he drove out of range of CCTV operators, but a police officer who had been alerted to the incident went to the address of the registered keeper and found Limbu and another man standing outside his home in Kennington, looking at the damage to his car.

The officer, PC Stuart Giddings, identified Limbu via the description given by the witness and could clearly tell he was intoxicated as he kept staggering about and had to hold on to the vehicle to stand up.

Limbu then tried to urinate against a lamppost in front of the officer but when he was told he couldn’t he became abusive.

As PC Giddings tried to handcuff him to arrest him, Limbu got agitated and bit the officer on the right hand and swore at him.

Both Limbu, who works for a government organisation, and the officer fell to the floor but PC Giddings managed to radio for back up from his colleagues while restraining him.

When another patrol car arrived, Limbu was detained and the VW car keys were found in his pocket.

After being put in handcuffs, Limbu then started complaining to officers that his asthma was bad and went limp.

He was taken to hospital to get checked over but refused to provide a urine specimen for analysis.

Limbu, of Beecholme Drive, Kennington, was later charged with driving without due care and attention, but when he appeared in court the charge was amended to dangerous driving.

He was also charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis, assault on an emergency worker, namely PC Giddings, as well as threatening behaviour towards the officer and admitted the offences when he appeared at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on April 13.

Neil Sweeney, prosecuting, said: “A member of the public spotted him at about 2.30am in North Street staggering about and barely able to walk and then he got in his vehicle.

“She heard a bang and saw the car had crashed. He (the defendant) was sat in the car and opened the door and then reversed into a tree.

“He then went up the kerb on the left side of the road and was seen swerving all over the road and the police were called as the witness was following him and then he went through a red light.

“In Elwick Road he drove on the wrong side of the road and on the pavement. In other roads he drove into a bollard and almost crashed into a shop and drove into another car and drove off again.

“Another motorist on the road had to take action to not hit him. His driving was poor, he swerved in the road, braked for reason and drove on the pavement and hit a bollard.”

Mr Sweeney also read out a victim impact statement from PC Giddings which said he had found Limbu clearly very drunk and aggressive and that he put his teeth into his hand.

“He drove at fairly low speeds and it was late at night and he has no previous convictions,” Mr Sweeney added.

The court also heard Limbu doesn’t normally drink and was shocked by his behaviour.

District Judge Justin Barron said it was low-level dangerous driving and he decided to adjourn sentencing to get a pre-sentencing report to be carried out on Limbu, but he did place him on an interim ban until then.

Limbu will be sentenced at Margate Magistrates’ Court on July 17 and was granted bail until then.
