The remains are not believed to be recent. One resident, who did not want to be named, said he saw police in the road at the weekend.

"There were four or five police and forensic vehicles," he said.

"I saw them bring a bag out of the house. About 10 to 15 years ago, my old boss used to live nearby and he was digging some potatoes and found an Anglo-Saxon body.

"The police worked out they were old bones and handed it to archaeologists.

"They said they weren't of any interest."
