A county cricket club is conducting an internal inquiry amid claims a team member streaked in an Ashford supermarket.

Staff at Sainsbury's were hit for six after a naked man - believed to be a member of the Hampshire second XI cricket squad - attempted to buy a bottle of vodka.

The cheeky chap almost came a cropper with the cops, after crossing the boundary to undertake what is believed to have been a bizarre prank.

But the stupor-market streaker was stumped when staff at the Bybrook store refused to serve him in the early hours last Thursday, and instead asked him to leave the premises.

Police were called to the Simone Weil Avenue store, at around 4.20am, but no offence was recorded.

Deputy store manager Jamie Curtis said: “We realise this was meant to be a bit of fun, but to avoid any embarrassment we asked the young man to leave the store straight away.

“We look forward to seeing him in store again - fully clothed.”

A witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said the streak involved a group of young men who were staying at the adjoining Ashford International Hotel.

They are believed to be members of the Hampshire team staying in the town, ahead of a Twenty 20 match against Kent’s second XI in Folkestone later that day.

Kent went on to win the match conclusively, by 48 runs.

It is thought the man responsible had been dared by his teammates to bare all, and take part in the naked shopping attempt.

A spokesman for Hampshire Cricket Club said: “We are aware of an alleged incident in Ashford last week and are conducting a thorough internal enquiry.

“Swift and appropriate action will be taken depending on the outcome of our own investigations.”
