Kent's oldest paperboy has been treated to a new bike after his was stolen with the help of the kmfm breakfast team.

Tony Fagg from Ashford, had his Trek Marlin 4 bike stolen from Stanhope last month, and after hearing the news, presenters Garry and Chelsea wanted to help.

The duo surprised Mr Fagg yesterday with a new set of wheels so he can continue with his daily paper round.

The pair had contacted Gavin Homewood, who owns Homewood Cycles on the Ellingham Industrial Estate in Ashford, to ask him if he could help.

He told the presenters he heard Mr Fagg's story on air and so was happy to offer him a replacement bike.

Mr Homewood, who lives in Ashford offered a Claud Butler hybrid bicycle plus lights to help during darker mornings.

Garry and Chelsea then made a surprise call to Mr Fagg to tell him the good news.

He was very happy to hear from them and told of how he gets up every morning at 5.30am to do his paper round, and has no plans to stop doing something he loves.

A kmfm listener also wanted to offer a helping hand after hearing hearing the story on the radio show.

Nicola, who is a nurse on the Isle of Sheppey, offered to pay for a bike lock.

Garry and Chelsea said they just knew their listeners would feel the same way they did after hearing Mr Fagg's bike had been stolen.

"When you hear everyone calls him "grandad" it just makes you think what if that was MY family," they said.

"We know there are bigger things going on in the world but we just knew our listeners would feel the same.

"He's such an inspiration, showing age is just a number and it's so nice to be reminded that there are people in the world who just want to help others.

"It's nice to look after those people who are usually so selfless."

This was the second bike Mr Fagg has unfortunately had stolen, but he was very grateful to the team for helping him get a new one.

"I'm very grateful," he said.

"I went out on it this morning.

"There are some good people about and I'm very grateful to them.

"It was a nice birthday present because it's my birthday today."

The Stanhope resident can be seen around the town on his trusty bike most days after collecting the newspapers at McColls on the estate.

He has spent 22 years supplying Ashford residents with their copies of The Sun, Daily Mail and more.
