Hythe Town snatched the Safety Net Kent League crown in dramatic fashion on Saturday.

An own goal by Tunbridge Wells keeper Michal Czanner gifted Hythe a 90th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw which earned Scott Porter's side the point they needed to clinch the title.

It meant that Herne Bay had to settle for the runners-up spot despite winning their final game 3-2 at VCD Athletic thanks to a last-minute strike by Byron Walker.

Hythe were in serious danger of seeing the championship snatched from their grasp when they trailed 2-0 at half-time at the Culverden Stadium, but Ronnie Dolan's 58th-minute goal gave them fresh hope and then Czanner's late blunder proved decisive.

Hythe manager Porter (pictured) said: "What I said at half-time you wouldn’t want to print! We weren’t at the races at all in the first half and I was disappointed, considering the occasion and what was at stake. I sounded off a bit and told them what I thought of them and how they had to turn it around.

"All credit to the boys, they took it on board, we dominated the second half and I was absolutely delighted."

Herne Bay, meanwhile, scored twice in the last seven minutes to snatch victory at VCD but it wasn't quite enough, and now they will hope to turn the tables on Hythe when the two sides meet in the Kent League Cup final at Folkestone on Saturday.
