Leon Camier looking to make his mark in first full season in World Superbikes

Leon Camier won the British Superbike title at a canter last year – but the Ashford ace insists his bid to repeat the trick on the world stage will be an entirely different proposition.

Camier (pictured) won 18 of the 26 races in 2009 to take the BSB title with ease – ending 136.5 points ahead of Airwaves Yamaha teammate and nearest rival James Ellison.

His domestic heroics saw the 23-year-old quickly snapped up by the Aprilia Alitalia Racing team where he will ride alongside four time 250cc world champion Max Biaggi.

But as he gears up for the season curtain raiser at Phillip Island this weekend, Camier admits he will have to up his game to export his domestic success onto the world stage.

“I am really looking forward to getting the season started and getting racing again in Australia and I am confident it can be a good year,” said Camier – who was brought up in Bethersden.

“Last year in the British class sometimes you could make a mistake and still come back and be challenging to win the race but that won’t happen in the worlds.

“Even the tiniest mistake and smallest amount of lost time can see you way down the field which is different from the British competition so I need to make sure I am racing well and on the pace for every part of every race.

“There are some great riders who are as far back in tenth in the field so it is going to be tough but I am feeling confident.”

Camier was not long out of nappies when new teammate Biaggi began his illustrious 20-year – and counting – career in the Italian Sport Production Championship.

And the Ashford youngster has vowed to become a human sponge in Australia this weekend as he bids to start his 2010 season in style.

“Having Max in my team is fantastic and he is more than happy to talk to me about things and problems that we might be having with the bike,” said Camier.

“He obviously knows what he’s doing and he’s been around for a long time so it is important I learn as much as I can from him because I have still got a lot to learn.

“He is nice guy and is happy to talk to me which is great and everything is looking good for what will hopefully be a good year for me.”

All Superbike World Championship races will be broadcast on British Eurosport, with the European rounds also available in High Definition. British Eurosport Sky 410 and Virgin Media 521, Eurosport HD Sky 412.
