A tweet from British Transport Police (BTP) said that the 29-year-old was refused entry to the station after he pushed through the barriers without a ticket.

Smith then allegedly threatened to punch attending officers, and verbally abused them, before being taken into custody.

He has since been charged with threatening behaviour.

A BTP spokesman said: "We were called to Ashford International railway station at 9.16am on yesterday following reports of a man travelling without a valid ticket.

"Officers attended, and the man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of fare evasion and a section 5 public order offence.

"Gary Smith, 29, has since been charged with threatening behaviour and released on bail until his next court appearance."
