One patient injured in fire at Hothfield Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre in Fridd Lane, Ashford

A patient suffered minor injuries after a fire broke out in a rehabilitation centre.

Fire crews were called to Hothfield Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre in Fridd Lane just after 6pm on Sunday.

Staff and patients were evacuated from the building after a blaze broke out in a second floor bedroom.

The patient was escorted to hospital for the treatment of minor injuries and other patients were temporarily moved from the unit as a precautionary measure.

Firefighters assisted staff at the facility to help residents with welfare and emotional support after dealing with the blaze.

The centre is a specialist centre for adults with brain injuries or other complex neurological conditions.

A spokesman for the centre said: "There was an incident involving a fire in a patient’s room.

"Staff intervened quickly to manage the situation and a patient was escorted to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

"Other patients were temporarily moved from the unit as a precautionary measure until the fire had been extinguished and no one else was hurt."
