Police called to reports of assault and disturbance as Ashford United beat Littlehampton Town 1-0 in FA Vase tie at The Homelands in Kingsnorth

Ashford United supporters have described behaviour by away fans as “disgraceful” as a flare was let off and police were called during Saturday’s FA Vase tie.

Although the Nuts and Bolts’ 1-0 win over Littlehampton Town saw them progress into the third round of the tournament, the meeting is likely to be remembered for the antics of some opposition supporters.

During the first half more than 10 Marigolds fans gathered behind the home team’s goal and a flare was let off from the area.

An announcement was also made during the match warning people at The Homelands not to climb on a wall.

Police were called during the second half to reports of an assault but no one was arrested.

They were called again when the game had finished due to concerns about rowdy behaviour.

Frustrated Ashford fans took to Twitter to express their disgust.

@MGracingboy said: “Disgraceful behaviour from Littlehampton fans today @AshfordUnitedFC Littlehampton you need to sort it out or complaints will be made.”

@wodens1 tweeted: “A well deserved win against a disgraceful team with disgraceful supporters. Best win of the season for that reason.”

@weareCascade said: “Great result for @AshfordUnitedFC yesterday against Littlehampton Town 1-0 2nd rd FA Vase! Pity about the away fans behaviour though.”

Police spokesman Karen Noble said: “Kent Police was called at 3.53pm on Saturday to Ashford Road, Kingsnorth, to a report of a disturbance. It was alleged one person had been assaulted. No allegations were made on police attendance and there were no arrests.”

She added that police were called again just after 5pm to reports of “people being rowdy” but no one was arrested.

Ashford United has not made an official comment but stressed via the club’s Twitter account that only a few Littlehampton fans caused trouble.

@AshfordUnitedFC tweeted today: “I think some people on Twitter are referring to a small number of their fans rather than the team.”
