VICTIM: Shankar Kathirgamanathan

TWO men are being questioned by police in connection with a racist murder in Ashford. Detectives arrested the two men, aged 18 and 22, this morning.

The pair, both from Ashford, were previously arrested and released on police bail the day after a vicious and prolonged attack on a 24-year-old Sri Lankan man from Singleton.

Shankar Kathirgamanathan was attacked as he walked with a friend over the Victoria Road footbridge from the town centre in the afternoon of April 22.

He was pronounced dead yesterday at 3.50am at the William Harvey hospital. A post mortem yesterday afternoon confirmed that he died from severe head injuries after two weeks in intensive care.

Det Ch Insp Anne Brittain, from Kent Police's major crime unit, said: "This was a very nasty attack and it is tragic that Mr Kathirgamanathan has died.

"We are committed to bringing the person or people responsible for his murder to justice and I would appeal again for information about this assault and urge anyone with information to come forward."

Witnesses or anyone with information should call detectives on 01233 619045 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
